Elizabeth Dole Foundation Awards Grant to Dog Tag Inc.
Washington, D.C. – Local nonprofit, Dog Tag Inc. (DTI) was awarded a grant from the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Hidden Heroes Fund today, in support of its efforts to impact the lives of military and veteran caregivers through its five-month fellowship program. DTI is among thirteen organizations nationwide receiving funding for innovative and evidence-based programs that address the long-term needs of military caregivers, the spouses, parents, and loved ones caring for wounded, ill or injured service members and veterans at home.
“Through the Hidden Heroes Fund, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation continues to build a strong, nationwide network of support for America’s military caregivers,” announced Senator Elizabeth Dole, president of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. “This year’s recipients are some of the most respected organizations working on behalf of the veterans’ community and caregivers, and together, they will help ensure our nation supports our hidden heroes for years to come.”
DTI empowers service-disabled veterans, military spouses, and caregivers to discover personal and professional fulfillment in the civilian world through an innovative business and entrepreneurship fellowship program. The five-month fellowship program seeks to bridge the gap often left for transitioning veterans and provide a transition program for often overlooked military spouses and caregivers. DTI’s comprehensive and multifaceted fellowship program enables DTI fellows to dip their toe back into education, gain first-hand experience in a living, breathing small business, and explore a wide-variety of civilian career paths and acquire key soft skills through Learning Labs. From mindfulness to journaling, nutrition to yoga, DTI’s holistic, wellness-oriented approach allows the service-disabled veterans, military spouses, and caregivers served to be mentally ready to absorb the lessons and resources the fellowship program provides and lay the groundwork for a successful transition into civilian life.
Dog Tag Inc.’s mission is a culmination of co-founders’, Constance Milstein and Father Richard Curry SJ, shared virtue of teaching a man or woman how to fish. Ms. Milstein has long championed military spouses – first by providing job opportunities at her previous bakery in New York and later by launching Blue Star Families in 2009. “We are proud to partner with EDF to help military caregivers find their voices and, in turn, discover personal and professional fulfillment through participation in our five-month fellowship program,” said Ms. Milstein.
